Children’s sleep duration: how much sleep do children really need?

Child sleep

Children’s sleep duration: how much sleep do children really need?

How much sleep do children need by age? Find a clear sleep chart, signs of too little sleep and practical bedtime tips.

Children’s sleep duration: why parents need orientation

When parents search for children’s sleep duration, they often want one clear number: how many hours of sleep does my child really need? The honest answer is: there are useful reference values, but no child sleeps exactly by the chart.

Sleep needs change with age. Babies sleep across day and night, toddlers often still nap, preschool children gradually grow out of daytime sleep and school children mainly need reliable evening routines. At the same time, differences appear early: some children are early birds, others naturally get tired later.

This guide helps you understand your child’s sleep better: with an age-based chart, signs of too little sleep, bedtime tips and clear guidance on when to seek medical advice.

Sleep chart: how much sleep do children need?

The following table provides practical orientation for total sleep within 24 hours. This includes both nighttime sleep and daytime naps.

AgeOrientation per 24 hoursTypical pattern
0–3 monthsapprox. 16–18 hoursseveral sleep phases across day and night
4–12 monthsapprox. 12–15 hourslonger night sleep plus naps
1–2 yearsapprox. 11–14 hoursnight sleep plus usually one nap
3–5 yearsapprox. 10–13 hoursnight sleep, nap often fades out
6–12 yearsapprox. 9–12 hoursusually night sleep only
13–18 yearsapprox. 8–10 hourslater tiredness, but still high sleep need

These values are not a test your child has to pass. They help you judge whether sleep duration is roughly on track. What matters most is how your child functions during the day.

The best sleep chart is only a starting point. Your child shows you in everyday life whether the sleep is truly enough.

Infographic showing children’s sleep duration by age, including guidelines for total, nighttime and daytime sleep. Guideline values for total sleep within 24 hours, including daytime and nighttime sleep.

How can you tell whether your child sleeps enough?

A well-rested child is not perfectly calm all day. Even rested children have bad moods and difficult moments. It becomes noticeable when tiredness shapes everyday life over a longer period.

  • your child is very hard to wake in the morning,
  • they are frequently irritable, whiny or unusually impulsive,
  • they seem unfocused or overwhelmed quickly,
  • they regularly fall asleep in the car or stroller,
  • they become “wired” in the evening instead of settling,
  • they sleep much longer at weekends than during the week.

Young children do not always show tiredness by yawning quietly. Some become louder, wilder or more clingy. That is why both the clock and behaviour matter.

How to find the right bedtime

A simple method is to calculate backwards: when does your child need to wake up? Subtract the estimated sleep need. If your child has to get up at 7 a.m. and needs around 11 hours of sleep, they should be asleep around 8 p.m. – not just starting the bedtime routine then.

  1. Set the wake-up time: daycare, school and family life often define it.
  2. Estimate sleep need: use the chart as orientation.
  3. Include settling time: if your child needs 20 minutes, start earlier.
  4. Observe for one week: does your child wake rested or remain tired?
  5. Adjust gradually: shift bedtime in small steps of 10 to 15 minutes.

Naps: keep, shorten or stop?

Naps are one of the most common reasons for sleep discussions. Some children still need a nap at three years old, others drop it earlier. Both can be normal.

If your child lies awake for a long time in the evening, a long or late nap may play a role. Shortening the nap or moving it earlier can help. But if your child is exhausted by the afternoon, the nap should not be removed just because of age.

In babies and toddlers, sleep can also change during developmental phases. If sleep suddenly becomes unsettled, a sleep regression may be part of the picture.

Sleep quality is more than sleep duration

The number of hours does not say everything. A child can spend a long time in bed and still sleep poorly. Another child may do well with a little less sleep if the sleep is restorative.

Good sleep conditions help: a calm evening routine, little screen time before bed, enough movement during the day, no caffeine, a suitable room temperature and a clear difference between active daytime and quiet nighttime. For babies, suitable sleepwear also matters. Read more in our guide dressing baby at night.

When is a sleep diary useful?

If you are unsure for several weeks whether your child sleeps enough, a sleep diary can help. For two to three weeks, note when your child falls asleep, wakes up, naps and how they behave during the day. This reveals patterns instead of judging single bad nights.

A sleep diary is especially useful if you want to discuss sleep problems with your paediatrician.

When should you seek medical advice?

Please seek professional advice if your child seems very exhausted for a longer time, snores loudly, has breathing pauses, wakes very often at night, develops strong fears, is clearly impaired during the day or you feel that something is not right.

If you are looking specifically for values during the first year, see Baby Sleep Needs. It focuses on babies and explains day sleep, night sleep and wake times.

Conclusion: the right sleep duration is individual

Sleep charts provide good orientation, but they cannot replace looking at your child. If your child seems awake, interested and resilient during the day, slightly shorter or longer sleep may still be normal. If tiredness dominates everyday life, it is worth adjusting bedtime, naps and evening routine.

The most important measure is not the perfect number, but a child who is sufficiently rested for the day.

Frequently asked questions about “Children’s sleep duration: how much sleep do children really need?”

It depends strongly on age. Babies need much more sleep than school children. Toddlers often need around 11 to 14 hours per day, while school children often need around 9 to 12 hours.

Yes. Total sleep duration means all sleep within 24 hours, including nighttime sleep and naps.

Not automatically. Some children need less sleep. What matters is whether your child seems awake, focused and reasonably balanced during the day.

Possible signs include severe morning tiredness, frequent whining, concentration problems, restlessness, being overtired in the evening or sleeping much longer at weekends.

This varies. Many children reduce naps between three and five years, some earlier, some later. The key is how your child copes during the day.

Subtract your child’s estimated sleep need from the required wake-up time and include time to fall asleep. If your child must wake at 7 a.m. and needs 11 hours, they should be asleep around 8 p.m.

Regular times, a calm evening routine, little screen time, enough movement during the day and a suitable sleep environment help many children.

If your child is very exhausted, snores loudly, has breathing pauses, sleeps poorly over a long period or is clearly affected during the day, seek medical advice.
