When Do Babies Sleep Through? Development, Reasons and Gentle Tips

Baby sleep

When Do Babies Sleep Through? Development, Reasons and Gentle Tips

From around six months, some babies can sleep for six to eight hours at a time, while many need longer. Learn what sleeping through means and what may support calmer nights.

What does sleeping through mean for a baby?

Parents often use “sleeping through” to mean falling asleep in the evening and not waking until morning. For babies, however, a continuous stretch of roughly six to eight hours is commonly described as sleeping through.

A baby who falls asleep at 7 p.m. and wakes at 2 or 3 a.m. may therefore have slept through by this definition, even though it understandably does not feel like a full night for the parents.

Normal nights also contain brief transitions between sleep cycles. Babies may move, make sounds, open their eyes or wake fully. The important question is often not whether a brief waking occurs, but whether your baby settles again and how much support they need.

For babies, sleeping through does not necessarily mean twelve hours without movement or brief waking.

When do babies sleep through? Age guidance

Sleep develops gradually throughout the first year and not at the same pace for every baby. The table offers broad guidance without presenting a particular age as a target.

AgeWhat night sleep may look likeRealistic expectation
0–3 monthsSleep is spread across day and night, with frequent feeds and short stretches.Do not expect reliable sleeping through.
3–6 monthsNight sleep may lengthen and some babies manage their first longer stretches.Longer stretches are possible but are still the exception before six months.
6–9 monthsDay-night rhythm becomes clearer and some babies sleep six to eight hours.Night waking and night feeds remain normal for many babies.
9–12 monthsMany babies can sleep longer stretches and settle more easily after brief waking.Sleeping through becomes more likely but does not develop steadily.
From 12 monthsNights often become longer and more stable.Teething, illness, development and separation reactions can still interrupt sleep.

From around six months, sleep-wake rhythm may become more closely linked to day and night. By the end of the first year, many babies can sleep six to eight hours at a time. Others need much longer, and even a baby who has already managed long stretches may temporarily wake more often again.

Why babies wake at night

Night waking can have many causes. Not every waking is a sleep problem and there is not always one clear reason.

Hunger

Newborns and young babies need regular feeds. Intervals can become longer with age, but the point at which a baby no longer needs a night feed varies.

Short sleep cycles

Babies move between lighter and deeper sleep more often than adults. At the transitions, they may become restless, make sounds or wake fully.

Closeness and security

During the second half of the first year, your baby increasingly understands that you still exist when out of sight, but cannot judge when you will return. This can increase separation protest and the need for closeness at night.

New skills

Rolling, sitting, crawling, pulling up and early walking may occupy babies at night as well. Movements are sometimes practised in bed and new impressions can make resettling harder.

Teething, illness or discomfort

Teething, infections, fever, pain, a blocked nose, digestive discomfort or a full nappy can temporarily disturb sleep. A sudden clear change should always be considered together with your baby's general condition.

Too little or too much tiredness

If your baby is not yet tired, they may resist sleep. If they are very overtired or overstimulated, settling can also become difficult. A flexible rhythm and individual tired signs are more useful than a rigid timetable.

Does a baby still need milk at night?

Whether your baby still needs breastfeeding or a bottle at night cannot be decided by age alone. Growth, weight gain, health, current diet and individual needs all matter.

Night feeds are normal and necessary in the early months. During the second half of the first year, some babies sometimes manage without milk at night, while others continue to drink once or more.

Do not reduce night feeds simply because another baby of the same age already sleeps through. Seek professional advice before making changes if your baby was premature, had a low birth weight, gains weight slowly, has an illness, has notably few wet nappies or follows medically recommended feeding intervals.

More food in the evening does not automatically lead to longer sleep. Do not pressure a baby to finish a feed or add cereal or other ingredients to a bottle to extend the night.

What may support calmer nights

Calmer nights rarely result from one single method. Several small, repeated signals can nevertheless help your baby distinguish day from night and settle more easily.

1. Make day and night feel different

During the day, light, conversation, walks and normal household sounds help your baby experience daytime. At night, low light, a quiet voice and minimal activity support rest.

2. Offer a flexible daily rhythm

Similar times for waking, meals, play, rest and bedtime can provide orientation. The rhythm should still follow actual sleep need rather than a rigid plan.

3. Notice tired signs in time

Tired signs differ from one baby to another. Several of the following signals often appear together:

  • Yawning,
  • looking away,
  • rubbing the eyes,
  • a fixed gaze,
  • fussing,
  • less interest in play,
  • more hectic movements.

Babies show tiredness differently. Observe which signs commonly appear before sleep for your child.

4. Repeat a short bedtime routine

A short sequence that stays broadly the same can make the transition to night more recognisable:

  1. Reduce the light.
  2. Change the nappy and put on sleepwear.
  3. Breastfeed or offer a bottle.
  4. Cuddle, talk or sing briefly.
  5. Place your baby in their safe sleep space.

The repeated order matters more than a perfect programme. Familiar signals help your baby recognise the transition to night.

5. Keep night-time interaction calm

When your baby stirs, calmly check what they need. Your voice, a hand on the body or gentle stroking may help. If they become more upset or cry, you can of course pick them up, feed them or soothe them in another way.

6. Do not treat settling support as a mistake

Some babies fall asleep while feeding, in arms or while being carried. Others can be placed down tired. There is no single correct method for every family or age.

If you want to change a habit, proceed gradually and avoid changing several things at once. Feeding, physical contact or rocking do not permanently prevent a baby from sleeping longer.

7. Look at several days

One night tells you little. A simple one- or two-week sleep log can reveal bedtime, waking, naps, night feeds, length of night waking and possible triggers.

What does not reliably improve sleeping through

Some common strategies may sound logical at first, but they do not reliably lead to longer sleep and can create additional pressure:

  • Keeping the baby awake deliberately during the day,
  • removing needed naps across the board,
  • pressuring the baby to drink or eat,
  • adding cereal or other ingredients to milk,
  • trying a different settling method every evening,
  • ignoring tired signs for a fixed bedtime,
  • using sleep products, sedating preparations or essential oils without professional advice,
  • comparing your baby with other children.

Overtiredness can make settling harder. Changes to naps should therefore be based on patterns over several days rather than the idea that your baby only needs to be tired enough at night.

Safe sleep matters more than sleeping through

A sleep environment should be judged by safety and suitability, not by whether it makes a baby sleep longer.

  • Place your baby on their back for sleep.
  • During the first year, use a separate baby sleep space in the parents' room where possible.
  • Use a firm, flat and well-fitting mattress.
  • Use a suitable sleeping bag instead of a loose blanket.
  • Keep the sleep area free from pillows, cot bumpers, sheepskins and soft toys.
  • Avoid cords, ribbons and loose items within reach.
  • Maintain a smoke-free environment.
  • Avoid overheating and do not use a hat for indoor sleep.

Read the full principles in Baby Sleep. Guidance on clothing is available in Dressing Baby at Night.

When a baby slept through and starts waking again

Sleeping through rarely develops in a straight line. A baby may have several weeks of long stretches and then wake more frequently again.

Possible triggers include new motor skills, separation reactions, teething, illness, travel, new childcare, changed naps, growth, altered feeding needs or especially stimulating days.

This does not mean your baby has forgotten how to sleep. The previous rhythm may simply no longer fit the current stage. Our article on Sleep Regression provides further guidance.

Total sleep matters more than one long night

A baby may get enough total sleep even while waking several times at night. Conversely, one long night stretch does not guarantee that the full sleep need is met.

Consider total sleep in 24 hours, number and length of naps, mood while awake, feeding and weight gain, and the pattern over several days. Age guidance is available in Baby Sleep Needs.

Parents need support too

Repeatedly interrupted sleep can be physically and emotionally exhausting. You do not need to wait until you are completely depleted before accepting help.

  • Share night duties where your feeding situation allows.
  • Let a second caregiver take an early morning period.
  • Plan rest rather than extra appointments during the day.
  • Accept help with housework, shopping or siblings.
  • Ask a trusted person to take the awake baby for a walk.
  • Contact a midwife, paediatric practice or family support service if exhaustion continues.

Even when a baby's sleep is still within a normal range, severe family strain is a valid reason to seek guidance.

When sleep problems should be discussed with a doctor

Speak to your doctor if your baby has pauses in breathing during sleep, snores noticeably on a regular basis, suddenly sleeps very differently while also appearing unwell, or feeds poorly. A very high and lasting level of strain on the family is also a good reason to seek support.

Conclusion

From around six months, some babies can sleep six to eight hours at a time. Many reach this stretch only towards the end of the first year or later. Even then, brief waking, night feeds and temporarily unsettled phases remain possible.

You can support your baby with a calm rhythm, repeated routines and reliable closeness. Sleeping through cannot be forced and is not a measure of whether you are doing things right. Individual sleep need, wellbeing and a safe sleep environment matter more.

Frequently asked questions about “When Do Babies Sleep Through? Development, Reasons and Gentle Tips”

It usually means around six to eight hours of continuous sleep, not necessarily a full evening-to-morning night.

Longer stretches become more likely from around six months. By the end of the first year many sleep six to eight hours, while others need longer.

Some three-month-olds manage longer stretches, but it is not something to expect reliably and frequent night feeds remain normal.

No. Many still wake for hunger, closeness, teething or between sleep cycles. This alone is not a sleep disorder.

Age alone is not enough. Growth, weight, health and feeding need to be considered. Seek advice if you are unsure.

A flexible daily rhythm, tired signs, a short bedtime routine, low light and activity at night and calm reliable support may help.

Teething, illness, new skills, separation reactions, travel or a changed daytime rhythm can temporarily affect sleep.

Seek advice for breathing problems, pauses, marked snoring, fever, pain, poor feeding, poor weight gain or severe ongoing family strain.
